& Move to the beat of your own drum... ---------------- Demi sat up on the bed she was in, she couldn't’t sleep again for the third night in a row, maybe more, she wasn’t keeping track. She was thinking about one thing, she recently met this one guy that she had feelings for. But he was the one who saw her father being not like himself, well just tempered. She sighed, he was the one who seen and heard and now knew everything that was troubling her inside. She didn’t know what to think now, does he even know how bad this could get, her father might get really mad and come for her again, when she was with him. The last thing demi wanted was for him to get hurt again. She couldn’t face herself if that happened for the second time. She looked around the room as she stared at the ceiling above her. This place wasn’t her normal home, just for now. She has been staying with her best friend’s family and they’ve been so kind to her. She heard her phone ring and she sighed. She quickly grabbed it, not wanting to wake up the family. She didn’t want to wake them up in the middle of the night, well morning.
She looked at the screen and couldn’t believe it. It had been her cousin’s name on the screen and she smiled. It has been so long that she has seen her cousin so she opened the phone and placed it onto her ear. ”Hello….yeah it’s me….yeah I’m awake….good job it’s a new record….3 o’clock in the morning….it’s ok….yeah it’s Monday…..yeah I just got up in a way….REALLY?” She said into the phone, trying to keep her voice down so she didn’t wake up the people in the rooms beside her. ” That’s great….when?….today?….you know I’m not staying with my family….okay…no I really don’t need to….really I couldn’t sleep anyways so it doesn’t matter….ok fine….see ya later….bye.”She said as she closed the phone, hearing the other click as she knew he hung up on the other line. She sighed as she place her phone down on the bed as she deiced to go to sleep again, or at least try to. She knew that she had to get up in three hours anyways.
Three hours has past and the young girl opened her eyes as she got up. Slowly but fast enough to have enough time. School started in two hours and she needed to go to classes today. She walked into the bathroom of the guest room and she turned on the shower. She pulled out her ponytail and walked back into her room. She grabbed the clothes that she planned to wear today. She grabbed her light blue sweeter, her white Hollister tee, and her light blue skinny jeans. She went back into the bathroom and got into the shower, the cold water fell onto her face. She shivered as she thought the cold water would help her wake up. She did her usual retinue and she washed her hair with shampoo and conditioner. She then threw soap onto her body and she walked out. She quickly dried herself and put on her clothes. She then rubbed her hands on the mirror to be able to see herself clearly. She brushed her hair and teeth. She then combed a brush through her hair as she left it down, she didn’t want to better with it right now.
She walked out of the bathroom and into the guest room. She grabbed her purse that had her homework and everything she needed for school inside. She grabbed her cell phone and walked out of the door. She walked down the hallway and down the stairs of the house. She looked around as she noticed the time, she was going very slow today. It was already seven thirty. She rushed out of the door and she ran to school. She really wasn’t the shape to be running right now, but she needed to get to school. She headed up the steps when she cam to the school and went to her first class. Many periods has passed off the day and she was all tired out, she had missed to much and she had to much homework that she needed to do tonight. She should have never thought of missing school, she was a good student and a smart student. Straight a’s, she had to be that way with the parents she had.
Demi sighed as she walked down the halls of the school, next class was gym and then lunch and study hall. She wasn’t in the shape for gym so she thought she would hang around the school. Skipping that class was the easiest. She walked down the hall in search of her locker. Her eyes hit on a similar number, 897. She smiled as she turned her combo and she opened her door. She sighed as she looked around, she hated her life. She wanted to see one person now, Jack. She knew she should give him so time with the things that happened Saturday night. She sighed as she put her homework into her purse for the next classes and stretched around for her lunch, she thought she didn’t even need it put his friends mom insited. She sighed as she found it and shut her locker. She walked down the halls again and out the doors. It was freezing outside, but that was the way she liked it. She walked around the school ground as she found the lake and smiled. She sat down on the grass near the lake as she looked around, she loved the way everything look, so peaceful. If only her life would be like that, it would just be perfect, unlike it was now. She pulled out her book that was in her purse as she played it across her lap, she loved to read, it was peaceful. Demi hasn't got the time to open up a book to just read lately, she missed how much relaxing it was.

i got your picture, i'm coming with you dear maria, count me in there's a story at the bottom of this bottle, and I'm the pen
________________________________________________________________________________ jack sat in math, his eyes looking at the teacher but totally unfocused. he was replaying every bit of last sunday's soccer game in his head, from start to finish. it was a sort of ritual that he had, one that he practiced religiously for days after a game. what could i have done better? what did i do wrong? it all sounds very negative, but really he usually reveled in the glory of his goals or amazing plays. as it turns out, the game last week was on a sunday afternoon, so it was the day after he had stayed up all night with demi at his dorm. it would be normal for him to be completely exhausted and wiped out from the all-nighter, but he had still been so pissed at her dad that he had taken it out on the other team. jack had scored two goals from midfield before the second half was over, and in the last few minutes of the game got red-carded for unnecessary roughness. a small, quick blonde midfielder on the other team had been dissing on jack's entire team, and when the blondie started making comments about jack's black eye he had snapped. it only took two punches to get the center to the ground, hard, fast, punishing punches that hit the other guy square in the eye and then a hook to the jaw. jack didn't get a scratch on him, and when the other guy fell to the ground clutching his eye, jack had spit on the ground next to him and growled out "nice shiner." afterwards didn't even wait for the referee to snap out of his shock and blow the whistle, jack had just stalked off the field. the other team considered a mass-fistfight to regain their fallen members honor, but by the size of jack and his fellow baywood buddies they had reconsidered. jack had walked off the fied a war hero, and he was not to be touched. in the locker room after the game his teammates had mobbed him, congratulating and thanking him for taking revenge. jack's coach screamed at him about sportsmanship for about a half hour, but then patted him on the back and told him 'nice goals in the first half'. jack was his star, and the star would never be kicked off the team. besides, they had just won their fifth game of the season, and the perfect record was intact. dreams of a state championship were looming on the horizon, and the world was a good place. jack's parents had avoided the touchy issue of his eye and the game, and had been satisfied with the 'i got in a fight and you should have seen the other guy' excuse. he left out the part where the other guy was his friend's dad. jack snapped out of his thoughts when he heard the teacher calling his voice, "ryder o'mally. would you care to explain problem number 3 to the class?" jack was about to start talking about the injustices of math when the bell rang. he tossed his math books in his backpack without a word, thankful for the schedule again. lunch was next, and he was eager to escape the hell-hole of the math wing. all in all, it's safe to say jack was the first one out of the classroom, and he booked it all the way to the cafeteria. his nikes squeaked against the annoyingly shiny tile floor in the lunchroom, exaggerated because of the rain and wet. jack glanced down in annoyance and walked into the buying section of the room, snagging a basket of chicken nuggets and fries. he payed, grabbed a ton of ketchup packets, and carried his food outside. the lunchroom was way too crowded and noisy, and he could feel the stares on his eye wherever he went. jack didn't understand why people were making such a big deal out of a bruise, but he figured it was because they knew he was a jock. he was their star, he was the soccer hero. he was supposed to be invincible. sorry for letting you down, high school. he thought with a mocking internal tone while he walked down the sidewalk towards the lake, his thoughts whirling. the usual swagger that all jocks seemed to be born with was still there, but it was tuned down a bit, more of an accent than the main voice. jack's right hand held the fist sized basket of food and his left reached in his pocked and pulled out his headphones. the skullcandy kind that were amazing and blocked out the world. jack stuck one headphone in his ear and turned up 'we ready' by archie. his all time favorite pre-game song. jack's head bobbed slightly to the addictive driving beat, and he looked up ahead to see the lake. he pulled off the sidewalk and towards the grassy beach area, enjoying the views of the peaceful water. no one here would critizise his eye or wonder why he didn't score just one more goal. this was a place free of critics and annoyances, free of cheerleaders who drooled over his every word. as jack thought that last part he visibly grimaced, remembering the incident on monday with one of the cheerleaders. she was a blonde, skinny, makeup-ed affair who practically clung to his side all day. she oo-ed and aww-ed about his eye, cooing over him and asking him if he was okay every ten seconds. it was embarrasing. jack snapped out of his haze when he saw a figure ahead, a grin breaking onto his face. he walked towards her, his stride purposeful now. "hey there dems" he said, before sitting himself down next to her on the beachfront. ________________________________________________________________________________ when the lights go off, i wanna watch the way you take the stage by storm - the way you wrap those boys around your finger go on and play the leader, 'cause you know it's what you're good at the low road for the fast track, make every second last

& Move to the beat of your own drum... ---------------- Demi sat in the grass as she pulled a piece of grass and looked at it. She sighed as she wrapped another piece around her finger and she pulled, then placed it back into the grass. she was really bored. She then looked at the book below her, remembering she was reading.she sighed as she flipped the page, she kept reading until she heard "hey there dems" she looked up and followed her eyes on him as he sat down next to her. "Hey Jack."She said as she looked at the book and placed it in her purse. she then looked into the man's eyes as she smiled.
She loved the way they always shined to her, she loved the way his eyes were a brown and she just loved them. her eyes gadded down onto the bruise her father have given him, she sighed as she looked down at the ground. she felt horrible for giving him that eye and she hopped it didn't hurt at all. she didn't want to cause any more trouble with him, if he didn't want to be friends she wouldn't want him to be friends with her. she wasn't going to force him to, she didn't want to hurt him anymore. She loved him, that last thing she wanted was to hurt him. he meant a lot to her, she didn't want to see him hurt.
"Jack...." she said as she sighed, "if you don't want to be my friend it's okay, i'll understand."She said as she looked up at him. she couldn't look at him at the moment so she stared off into the water. Demi pushed her legs up and tucked herself into a ball, she didn't want him to get hurt again. she thought she could handle when he comes back again. she would take a pretty good beating but she knew she could survive a least one. "Just think about it, you might get hurt again for being my friend."She said as she sighed. she just wanted him to think about their friendship, if he really wanted to be friends with her after all that happened with them.
the memories of that night scared her, she didn't want to think about it. but it appeared it in her mind whenever she closed her eyes. she hated it, the vision and everything else. she looked around, she shivered. she had that fear that was in her eyes that night come back. why did her life have to be like this, she has done nothing wrong to the world or the people around her. she was helpful to everyone, the sweetheart was her title in the school. Everyone called her that, that was one of the many words to describe her. she is also adventures and caring and many other things. she is creative and one of the nicest people you could meet, but no one could see her like that now. the way she looked now, no one could tell how she really was.

________________________________________________________________________________ jack had plopped himself down on the grass next to demi, setting his food in between them. he watched from his peripheral vision as she closed her book and smiled over at him. "Hey Jack." he returned the smile and getsured towards the fries, implying that if she wanted any she could have some. he looked out over the lake and watched as birds landed in the ruffling water. they always seemed to know exactly what to do, when to migrate, when to fly, when to avoid danger; and the likes. jack wished he had a bird's intuition when it came to his life at the moment, he really didn't know what to do sometimes. he glanced down and grabbed a fry, popping it into his mouth and glancing over at her book. he hadn't really pinned her as a reader, but he was one to know you couldn't tell everything about a person just because of their title. if everyone thought jack was only a jock they would assume he was an idiot and not worth talking too since he would only brag about his stats. which he might do, but he was most definetly not an idiot. "Jack...." she said as she sighed, "if you don't want to be my friend it's okay, i'll understand." jack's head whipped around to look at her, his eyes wide and his mouth stopped with the chewing. he quickly swallowed and took a deep breath, his eye throbbing just because of the moment. he could feel her eyes on his bruised one, and it made him want to wear a pirate's patch to school the next day, then maybe no one would look at it so much. she continued after a slight pause, her words hesitant. "Just think about it, you might get hurt again for being my friend." jack shook his head in disagreement, his jaw setting and his heartbeat visible in the corner of his jaw. it was his own fault he had gotten hurt, lazy fighting technique, and it wouldn't happen again. of course, jack would still get into fights, but he wouldn't be the one limping away shamefully. he never was. "that was my fault. you shouldn't be worrying about me, i'm a big boy." he gave her a playful glance that was forced due to the serious tone of the moment. "i'll be...." he paused as if searching for the right word. he knew what he wanted to say, but he wasn't sure what she would do or how she would reacct, and so he chose the safe word. "...friends with whoever i want to." he popped another fry in his mouth, his entire body language screaming 'and that's that' even though he didn't say it aloud. he wasn't sure what she was thinking, but he knew he didn't want their relationship to end here. he supposed he would just have to play it by ear, and knowing demi he wouldn't ever get bored. from behind them a group of girls walked by, giggling and talking loudly. suddenly they hushed, and someone stage whispered "that's him", and they all erupted into laughter again. jack knew they were talking about his eye, and it pissed him off again. why was everyone making such a big deal out of a stupid black eye! it was JUST a BRUISE!!! jack's jaw clenched again, and he forced himself to focus on the water. if demi looked down she would see his fist, which was clenched and pressed against the grass, all of his energy needing to be focused on something. ________________________________________________________________________________ when the lights go off, i wanna watch the way you take the stage by storm - the way you wrap those boys around your finger go on and play the leader, 'cause you know it's what you're good at the low road for the fast track, make every second last

& Move to the beat of your own drum... ---------------- Demi looked around the lake as she sighed, life around her was moving just fine. she felt like she was dead inside. but the only one that made that dead come back to life again was Jack. She didn't know why she just met the guy, but somehow she had major feelings for him. she hopped she would get to know him more and like him even more than she did right now. but without him around she was dead, living dead. she looked at the nature, life seemed so perfect for them unless someone came around and killed their habitat. Or even them that would be like the life she was living right now. But those eyes she looked into brought her life back into her hands, not into everyone else's. She never had this freedom, this feeling before but with only him. she has never went through this before, why was it happening now, what was she suppose to do. Go with the flow, see what it's going to turn out to be, does he like her the same way. those were the questions she asked herself when she saw him, no one made her feel this way but when he was around the feelings rushed over her again.
she watched him sit down and she smiled a bit to him. she loved him, she knew she jsut met him but the feelings she felt was jsut love. love was the thing she was thinking about, love she had for him. But how could she just love him, she liked Jasper and Reece too. that is weird how he was the one she loved but didn't love the others. maybe it was because she felt he liked her in the same way. as for the others, she wasn't possitive. but how could she be so sure with him, maybe she shouldn't be friends with him if she didn't know, if he didn't know. she loved the guy but why. he was hansom and he had amazing eyes. he had a great personality, great body, great hair, what was there not to like. don't forget the part of him saving her life, once or twice she wasn't counting, she would say twice though. she sighed this was all so diffuclt, love was the trouble. maybe she would pass over it, it could only be a fase of love, nothing more. or maybe it wouldn't, what should she do then. she didn't know what was going on, only god knew.
she looked at him as the fries were placed in between them. she looked at him as he looked like he wanted to share. she took a fry and put up to her mouth. taking a bite she felt like she was in heaven, she hasn't had fries in a long time. Demi studied his face, he didn't reply yet. he looked like he disagreed with her statment. but if he stayed with her, he would get hurt. it would be his fault that he got hurt and she couldn't take that blame that quilt again. she looked at the people in the hallways that stared at him, all because of her he got that. if she hadn't have met him, she wouldn't have put him in danger. he won't be in this mess. if only she hadn't have drowned. if only she hadn't went to the beach, like her father asked. if only she hadn't moved back here and lived with her grandma still. all this would have never happened if she lived with her grandma still and would have put on a happy face for her dad. She moved, and now look what she has cause to the people around her, everyone was depressed when they talked to her, because she was. she wished she could find a way to push the depression aside and be a normal person with her friends.
she tired to, it was just so hard to do. she tired her best, to smile at least, but people could tell they were fake smiles, all of them. but the ones with Jack. she didn't know why but he made her feel special inside, like she was her own person, she could be herself around him. which she was, she was around anyone, but she knew he wouldn't judge her, like everyone else had. she didn't care she ignored them. they always say oh there goes another elite and no one wants to be friends with her out of her clique. but people said she was the sweetest person in the world, why couldn't everyone else see that in her when she passed by them in the halls. maybe she would have more friends. don't get her wrong she has tons of friends, just some are not that loyal like the ones she could met one day. "that was my fault. you shouldn't be worrying about me, i'm a big boy."
she sighed, "Jack i'm putting you into danger, into my troubles. if i haven't had drowned that day you would have never met me, never be in any of this....if i just hadn't moved back here last year, none of this would have happened to you....to me....i would be in Kentucky, keeping that strong face on for my grandma and me....living another lie....Can't you see i'm putting you in danger...i don't want that to happen to you." she said as she looked at him gazing into his eyes, sometimes she thought he didn't understand, his life could be effected by this. "i'll be...." she looked at him as she waited for him to finish his sentence....he'll be....he'll be what...."...friends with whoever i want to." her eyes went from his gaze to the ground again, he couldn't see it. "But i can't take it anymore...the guilt of me hurting you."she said as she sighed, "Maybe i'll just move back to Kentucky, my grandma would be happy enough to have me back....and you'll have you life back without any of my troubles." She said, not knowing it was going to come to this. but if it got him safe and out of trouble with her troubles and her fahter then she would do whatever it took to give him his freedom, away from her.

________________________________________________________________________________ he popped another fry into his mouth while he waited for her to respond, knowing he threw a pretty heavy statement out there. her answer didn't surprise him, but it wasn't the kind of reply he was hoping for. "Jack i'm putting you into danger, into my troubles. if i haven't had drowned that day you would have never met me, never be in any of this....if i just hadn't moved back here last year, none of this would have happened to you....to me....i would be in Kentucky, keeping that strong face on for my grandma and me....living another lie....Can't you see i'm putting you in danger...i don't want that to happen to you." jack swallowed the french fry and watched her as she finished talking, his jaw again setting in that disbelieving and upset clench. he was annoyed at what she was saying, yeah, annoyed. demi was always thinking she was hurting everyone else and it seemed that she was stuck in a state of eternal torment towards herself, and that pissed jack off. she started speaking again, her face taunt and sad. "But i can't take it anymore...the guilt of me hurting you."she said as she sighed, "Maybe i'll just move back to Kentucky, my grandma would be happy enough to have me back....and you'll have you life back without any of my troubles." jack again waited in silence while she finished, blinking a few times in apparent disbelief. he thought for a second about how to word what he was feeling, and he looked out over the lake in the silence. part of him wanted to treat her how he would another guy, by shaking her shoulders and getting in her face to scream wtf is your problem!!!! stop with the pity parade and get on with your life! but the other part of him knew that probably wouldn't go over very well. he unclenched his jaw and turned his head to look at her, his eyes shining with a serious sort of gaze. he wanted to only say this once and never have to think about it again, that way it wouldn't fester in his mind. he didn't want to hurt or upset her, but this needed to be said. "demi... you need to stop feeling sorry for yourself. maybe that's why everyone talks about how depressing you are to be around, because you are always sad and talking about how bad your home life is." jack paused, knowing what he was saying would sting and hurt; and he didn't want to hurt her. he just needed to say what was on his mind, because that's what friends did, even when the other one wouldn't want to hear it. he broke eye contact and glanced back up towards baywood, feeling the awkward creep up in the quiet. the grass between his fingers tickled, and he pulled on it absently before continuing. "please don't think i'm dismissing what is happening to you, because i'm not. i understand how horrible your dad is, but i'm just trying to explain what i feel... what people are saying behind your back...even though i know it just complicates things even more." jack looked down to study the grass between his fingers, glancing up at her every now and then. none of that came out the way he wanted it too, it all sounded so harsh and mean, but he couldn't just take the words back and pretend it never happened. life didn't work like that. ________________________________________________________________________________ when the lights go off, i wanna watch the way you take the stage by storm - the way you wrap those boys around your finger go on and play the leader, 'cause you know it's what you're good at the low road for the fast track, make every second last

& Move to the beat of your own drum... ---------------- Demi sat on the wet grass below them, it must have rained a few days back. she pushed her hands through her curls as she sighed. Could life be this complicated, she wondered. she met the gaze with Jack and held onto it, wondering if he would stay with her, through all of it, everything. maybe he would, she couldn't tell by the looks he gave her. sometimes it was hard to tell, she would guess have thoughts in her mind about it. but something else was hard to tell. she usually could tell how people felt when she looked at them but sometimes it was hard to read what they were thinking. sometimes she wished she could read minds, see what other people think. not leaning on them to tell you what they're thinking. but she liked not anyone knowing everything she thought, all the secrets she thought about every second of the day. if someone read them, they would be surprised.
she was tired of boredom, everyday, every sec of her life. she hasn't been doing anything much lately. it's like the world was moving around her and she stood still. her life flashing by her and she didn't budge, didn't move one step to catch that life and not let it pass her by. she just stood still as her friends enjoyed their lives without her. Demi didn't care much about them leaving her she was pulling the mood down anyways. but she wanted to go with them, live the same life as them. but it was like some wall in between them. Demi's life was dull and boring, nothing ever happened, she didn't do anything, didn't go anywhere. she never went to classes anymore, just hung out in the courtyard, knowing it was bad for her grades and soon they would be at the all time low so she wouldn't have time to catch up because she is in advance classes. that's were everything about being smart was a drag, if you missed one day, you'll never catch up on the day for a life time. it was hard to make up for it.
demi didn't hang out with the clique anymore, only close friends. which were Reece, Jacob and now again Jack. those were the only people she talked to, only people that knew and cared. she tried to make it better, but without getting her or her father hurt that was the problem. she sat in the courtyard, thinking about more thoughts no one would ever think about. something she hasn't seen anyone think about. she thought she was alone, knowing no one who has gone through something like this better. nothing this big, sure Drama. but drama wasn't this big, it was something small that people made and past on which would then turn into gossip. gossip. drama. she hated the whole thing, yet everything came back to her and hit her from behind. no she never started the gossip or drama she would sit and watch. some might bring her in but besides that she tried to stay away from everything drama related. which was everything in high school, sadly. but she stayed away with much force and really no care for any of it. unless it was her friends, that was when this teen got involved.
Demi stared into his eyes as she knew he thought otherwise of her explanation, she waited for the words she wanted to hear to come out of his mouth. she pick a piece of hair that fell over her shoulder and turled it with the curls wrapping around her finger. over and over. one by one on top of each other they fell. she felt the wind blow and send shivers down her spin and made her hands fall from her hair to her arms rubbing them slowly. it was a cold winter day and being demi she forgot her jacket in her locker. "demi... you need to stop feeling sorry for yourself. maybe that's why everyone talks about how depressing you are to be around, because you are always sad and talking about how bad your home life is." demi's eyes swelled up with tears as she knew it was true. but one thing was having the person you liked standing in front of you and telling you, him being the one to tell. of all the people, why him. she knew this was all true and she should have kept things to herself, even though he found out by her father.
Demi looked at him in sock as the tears swelled up into her deep brown eyes. she held back the tears as she couldn't look at him she looked at the lake, she didn't want him to see her cry, it was sad and annoying. so she held it back as she pulled herself into a ball. she couldn't find the words to say to him. "please don't think i'm dismissing what is happening to you, because i'm not. i understand how horrible your dad is, but i'm just trying to explain what i feel... what people are saying behind your back...even though i know it just complicates things even more." harsh words were used, but all so true. she knew this everyday, she felt the same way. she just didn't know what to do. but this was all she was good for, to be placed with those harsh words that they only meant so much. she felt the tear drip down her cheek. great now she was going to cry, could this day get any better. "Jack...your right...right about everything...i shouldn't let this get to me." she said, beaks in between words to hold her breath so she doesn't break out and start bawling. she hated this, how was she going to handle her father, she knew if she didn't go back he would find someone else to beat on. " i just don't know what to do." she mumbled to herself. "Jack..i'm thinking about going home, not staying at Reece's anymore, my home." she said as she sighed and shivered. she missed her family to much to stay at Reece's, even though they were her family too. "but promise me one thing Jack....that you'll stay with me through everything." she said as she finally glanced at him, not being able to hold the tears back and they fell one by one hitting the grass below them.
